Steamboat, Colorado

steamboat colorado travelSteamboat is a remote ski town with surprisingly a lot to do, even if you don’t ski or snowboard. But if you are visiting Steamboat, especially in the winter, you are likely interested in the mountain, the topography, snowfall totals, base area, types of runs, and so on.

I plan to cover all of that. But if you stumbled upon my blog, you may also be interested in the family-friendly aspects of Steamboat, like childcare, ski school, family lodging and other activities for children since this is, in fact, a blog written by parents traveling with a baby.

Let’s look at the pros and cons…

Arriving at the Yampa Regional Airport in Hayden

The biggest downfall to Steamboat, especially when traveling with children, is that it is kind of hard to get to.  Unlike some of the other Colorado resorts, like Breckenridge, Copper or Vail, which are within a two hour drive from Denver, Steamboat is a bit farther. It’s about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive from Denver, and that drive can be a bit treacherous or longer if there is a lot of recent snow which can cause slick or even closed roads. Driving isn’t your only option though, you can also fly into the small town of Hayden (Yampa Valley Regional Airport), which is only a 30 minute shuttle or car ride from the base. The caveat is, it’s a small airport so very few cities (11 to be exact) offer direct flights, and airfare can be a bit expensive. But I would definitely recommend flying into Hayden, rather when white knuckling the steering wheel on the drive from Denver. By the way, the distance from Denver can actually be a good thing too!

One of the most positive aspects of Steamboat is definitely its family-friendly feel. It offers a variety of terrain and a world-class ski school, and there is always something going on at the base.

My husband and I have skied together since we started dating, and we’ve visited numerous resort towns. Now that we have a child who will be learning to ski in a few years, this resort may quickly become my favorite ski town! Here are a few of the reasons why.
